Third Annual 5+ Hours of Light

The 3rd annual 5+ Hours of Light will take place on Sunday December 22nd! Celebrate the winter solstice with your snow bike and your friends. We are having a 24 Hours of Light style of race from sunrise to sunset on the shortest day of the year.

CMBC considers itself lucky that we have a great partner - summer and winter - in Biathlon Yukon. Having the indoor warmth of the Bears' Den and the use of their trails makes this a really awesome, collaborative event. In exchange, they ask our members to volunteer at their Yukon Championships, scheduled this season for January 12, 2014. Please consider signing up for this as a way of saying thanks.

The important bits: Date: Sunday December 22, 2013 Time: Registration from 9am-10am, race start is at sunrise: 10:10am Location: Start and finish is at Biathlon Yukon in the Bears' Den (Grey Mountain Road) Categories: Solo or teams. If you don't have a fat bike, sharing a bike among team members is a great way to participate Cost: $10 for cmbc members / $20 for non-members Volunteers: We always need them. Please contact Valérie at valgir77 at hotmail.com

This is a fun event, a celebration of fat bikes and a race. You can register as a solo rider or as a team to see how many laps of the course you can complete in 5 hours and 37 minutes (sunrise to sunset). If you can only make it out for a lap or two in the middle of the day, please do! Last year, some people came out to ride just one lap and then spent time drinking coffee by the wood stove in the Bears' Den. Others raced to see how many laps they could complete in 5 hours and 37 minutes. The course will be similar to last year (from the biathlon range, down Yellow Brick Road, Magnusson trails, Boogaloos). If you want the trail to be awesome, please consider snowshoeing or biking the route before the event to pack the snow down.

Fat bikes have been selling like hotcakes so it is unlikely that our local bike shops will be able to have demos on hand for folks to try out. However, fat bikers are pretty generous with sharing their rides. If you don't own a bike or can't borrow one, you can still come up to the biathlon range and see what this is all about. You might be able to try one out.

There will be delicious snacks and a light lunch available, all made by cmbc elves (aka board members).

Please bring your own water, mugs and bowls.

Same rules as 24 Hours of Light - NO ARTIFICIAL LIGHTS.

If, at 8am on the morning of the event, Environment Canada is showing -28C or colder, the race will be postponed.

Stay tuned to the facebook event page for updates and to let us know you are planning to attend.
